Attacking A Scam Head On

For well over one year, we have been following an ongoing scam that has surfaced in newspapers across the USA and has been inadvertently promoted by Career Builder, the online job posting site. The M.O. of the ad is usually something like this: we need a flight attendant to work on our corporate jet located in Baltimore, or located in some other USA city. Without going into all of the details — you can read the related thread on this topic — the person on the other end manages to extract cash from an unsuspecting individual with the promise that the “candidate” will be reimbursed upon arriving at the interview in a distant city. Of course, this never happens: you wire the money and Poof! he is gone! No tickets wired and you are out of cash.

One of our forum members, Train2000 did some sleuthing and found the FBI site whereby internet complaints can be filed. She shared that information with us and then promptly filled out a complaint herself. Within one hour, an FBI representative contacted her and left a message on her answering machine!

I cannot be certain if Train2000’s efforts will pay off, but they cannot hurt. If enough people complain, then the FBI could move this case forward — you can only imagine the number of internet scams the FBI must deal with, so squeak the wheel in order to get it greased.

So, please visit our forums and read all about it. I am eager to close the thread up once an effective resolution has been achieved. Heck, we have had over 100 replies to the thread and more than 13,000 page views…it is high time to let this guy pay for his transgressions!

Turning A Bad Situation Around

Our forums are replete with personal flight experiences, job interviews, catering questions, and much more. I won’t pretend that CFAC is the only place on the internet covering business aviation issues, but finding personal accounts from other corporate flight attendants elsewhere doesn’t come easy.

To my surprise I found a blog from someone who is new to corporate aviation on Myspace. Yes, this person’s entry, “How To Successfully Be A Successful Piece of Sh*t” is getting a lot of traffic. You can read it here to find out how she turned a bad situation around for the good.

August 30th Press Release

I try to send out a press release about this site from time to time, but only if I have something of value to report. Today, PR Leap, PR News, and a few smaller sites are publishing a press release that I wrote and have headlined, “Weary Flight Attendants Find Valuable Help Through the Corporate Flight Attendant Community.”

In the press release I discuss two points: Jean Dible’s new column titled, “Your Food Safety Connection” and the resume posting offer that I had pulled earlier this year and am now featuring once again. Yes, the headline could appear to be a mismatch but it isn’t. Please read the full press release to find out what I am sharing with the media.

You Can Advertise On This Site

The question comes up from time to time: How do I advertise with the Corporate Flight Attendant Community website? Well, that is a good question! Actually, there are two ways: through banner ads and/or through Google AdWords. Please read on to learn about your options.

  1. If you have a corporate flight attendant training company or other service, consider advertising with your banner ad on our Industry Links page. Yes, there are hundreds of other pages on the site, but this page is probably the most appropriate for your business aviation related company. Currently, all slots on our busy forum landing page are spoken for.
  2. If you have a different type of business and you would still like to reach our member demographics, then consider using the Google Adwords program. Via Adwords [a sample follows], you can specifically advertise on the Corporate Flight Attendant Community site which includes everything but the catering section. Ads run on the latter section, but because Corporate Jet Catering is hosted on a separate server, I cannot guarantee your ads will show up on that site.

If you are interested in displaying a banner ad, please contact Matt Keegan via email at info@corporateflyer.net.

NBAA 59th Annual Meeting & Convention

Mark October 17-19, 2006 on your calendars as those are the dates that the National Business Aviation Association {NBAA} will be holding their annual convention in Orlando.

This year’s theme is, “A Year’s Worth of Business in Three Days,” which aptly describes what the NBAA tries to accomplish through its annual meetings. In those three days there is so much to do including attending seminars, meeting vendors, going to static displays, networking and, of course, going to the various parties being held there. If you plan on attending, expect to spend three very long, but profitable daysa on your feet.

My schedule hasn’t been firmed up yet, so I cannot tell you if I will be able to attend. If you do plan on attending, bring plenty of business cards with you and come up with a handy 15 second pitch about what you do and what you have to offer to potential clients. If they have more questions, then let that conversation unfold naturally.

Job Notice Updates

When new jobs are posted to the forums, I like to notify community members about most of these notices. Typically, I will send an email out once every week or two to announce updates, but more frequently if several new jobs are posted. Still, there are times when I send an email out announcing fresh opportunities another new job is posted soon thereafter. Instead of flooding everyone’s email box with an additional message I simply let the job stay online unannounced.

I encourage everyone to log in regularly for updates. Even when work isn’t listed, some of the comments made by fellow message board participants can be enlightening. Naturally, you need to take most comments with a grain of salt, but some useful stuff is shared that could possibly impact your jobseeking quest.

Above all, please make certain that your email address is current. If it isn’t, you won’t get updates. You can click on PROFILE at the top of the forum page after you sign in and update your email address. Also, check your email account to enable mail from matt@corporateflyer.net to get through to you.

Serve ‘Em Red or White Wine!

Doc Sullivan recently shared on her Aircrew Health News blog that white wine may be beneficial to the heart. Previously, it had been known that certain antioxidants in red wine gave imbibers protection, but more recent research suggests that the pulp found in white wine may also be “cardioprotective” for the heart.

So, the next time you are looking after the good of your pax, serve ‘em red or serve ‘em white…both wines appear to be heart helpful.
