October Means it is Time for the NBAA

October is a month much more notable than falling leaves, pumpkins, and cool crisp air. October is the month when the NBAA holds its big meeting.

30,000 people are expected to attend this year’s conference in Orlando during the third week of the month. Static displays, vendors hawking their wares, and informative seminars are some of the many “happenings” at each show. From what I understand the NBAA’s big meeting is one of the largest of its kind.

I won’t be attending this year’s conference unless some last minute changes to my schedule permits me to do so. However, if you do go plan on bringing scads of business cards with you, wear comfortable walking shoes, and firm up your “elevator pitch” as you can expect to meet scores upon scores of people including several with hiring authority. Have fun!

References or Not?

As I continue to help corporate flight attendants find work, the question of references comes up. Without drawing out the conversation here are my recommendations:

  • Line up three business related references who can attest to how well you work.
  • Do not list these references on your resume. Instead, create a separate sheet of paper and title it Personal References. Next, include the same personal contact information as found on your resume. List the referring person’s name, address, email, and phone number; have at least one or two lines between each reference.
  • Make sure your references know that you are using them.
  • No need to list References Upon Request on your resume as that is a given.

That’s it! Happy reference page writing to you.

Introducing Jet Venue

Over the past several weeks I have been working somewhat behind the scenes on a few different projects one of which I am happy to report to you here. Jet Venue, a site featuring up-to-date hiring information for commercial flight attendants, is now active and ready for your review.

I started the site to meet the needs of the many flight attendants or flight attendant seekers who visit CFAC but decide that the airlines are for them. I believe that Jet Venue can fulfill that need by redirecting the appropriate traffic from CFAC to the new site.

Please stop by and check out the new site when you get a chance!

Your Objective Catering Posts

Any help that you can give to provide objective comments regarding your catering experiences would certainly be appreciated on our Corporate Jet Catering site.

Corporate Jet Catering is a hold over from our EZBoard days, but the site still serves a good purpose as you can find caterers from various parts of the world. Visitors are encouraged to post their comments about their catering experiences, but I certainly do hope that everyone remains objective in their commenting.

You can also download a free copy of an in-flight catering guide through this site, find a catering mentoring class, and read Jean Dible’s informative articles about food safety.

Are You Satisfied With Your Benefits?

This morning I read Daniel Slapo’s thread about workmen’s compensation and I got to thinking: are you satisfied with your level of benefits? Chances are if you are a contract flight attendant, you are 100% self funded when it comes to benefits. What you make per diem, part of that amount is set aside for health insurance, dental, retirement, and the like.

If you are a full time worker, some sort of worker’s compensation plan should be in place. In addition, health and dental, sick days, vacation time, 401(k), should be part of the package. Anything above this is gravy, but I know some of you do get profit sharing which can be immensely useful.

There is a movement away from paying full benefits at some companies; are you sensing the same thing happening where you work?

Your GMail Invite

If you requested a GMail invitation from me and have yet to receive one, it could be that the delay is on Google’s end. It seems that as I extend invitations out, Google isn’t delivering them at the moment. In time’s past when this happened, Google was overwhelmed with responses and held back on forwarding invitations.

Should you decide that you still want an invitation, please forward a note to me at my address and I’ll authorize Google to send one out. Once things clear on their side, you should receive an email allowing you to open up a GMail account.

Don’t Forget Your Resume Updates!

The question has been raised: how often should I update my resume? Well, once a year is a minimum amount, but twice annually makes the most sense. Consider what you may have changed over the past year:

  • Your email address.
  • Your cell phone number.
  • You’ve taken recurrent training.
  • You’ve added another jet to your flight experience.
  • You’ve achieved some sort of “mentionable” career highlight.

There can be a myriad of reasons why your resume should be updated, even totally refreshed. Have a friend look over your current copy to give you their independent, objective viewpoint. In addition, attach your copy to an email and send it to me. I will do this for you too whether your resume is featured here or not.

More Jobs To View

Well, I did it. This morning I added 22 jobs to the Job Opportunities site, with 21 of them pertaining to pilots and other business aviation employees. Many of you have missed the extra bit of information gleaned from the AEB, so I decided to respond to popular demand and go ahead and list these types of jobs again on CFAC.

I won’t be adding them too often, twice a week or so. Also, if the response is minimal or not perceived as adding much value, I’ll pull the trial after 30 days time. So, if you want to continue to see the other jobs, please check out the forums on a regular basis.
